The system in the US at one time, thinking my parents generation,
where the health system, not perfect, but was affordable--companies
gave a full pension to its employees--that along with social security
was enough for most.
But with the advent of 401K plans (which weren't created for the
preeminent purpose it now holds), corporate america moved away from
that social contract.
Now, who benefits--the insurance companies of course but wall street
(privatized healthcare, each investing on its own, think of all that
money floating around to be invested (and lost) because as I said
y'day, we are now a nation of small investors thru the 401K plan and
we know the small investor is screwed everyday--how am I supposed to
know how and what to invest in.

long story short, America no longer has basic moral values--maybe what
Pynchon is tapping into being born when he was born and living thru
the upheavals that he did was that American promise, that abdication
of responsibility by corporate powers, perverted political religion,
sexual anbd political repression, racism, I could go on and on.
Beyond Pynchon's humor, there's Pynchon's longing that emerges in many
of his books which I find much sympathy and sadness (maybe thats what
makes him a romantic)
We, in this country, are like children, longing for the loving mother
and protective father--we have a demented and deranged of the latter
and at least those of us who are aware of such things, still longing
for the former...(and not V. insert shudder)

well, i'm blabbing...
