but they're not real in the sense when reading a novel I never think
of any character as flesh and blood
it may subvert another convention but at this stage isn't that whole
pomo thing such a tiresome trope--don't think Pynchon is doing that
bit but he can't do nice very well imho
unless its integral to the story in some way who the fuck cares about
a PIs parents?
i want loners, alkies, miserable and cynical (that's what makes this
stuff interesting--its like watching a TV detective show which moves
along quite nicely trying to catch some psycho but gets bogged down
again and again with the investigator's personal relationships--its
too soap operay and drives me nutso--get back to the story that's what
my brain is saying)
the whole shebang w/r/t Doc's parents is too weak for my tea
sorry to say, but Marguerite Erdman is alot more interesting parent
(at least to read about)
