I'd say, they just come to visit, he's in touch with them. They like
each other.
There's too little of that in fiction, and far too many unhappy people...
I think Pynchon does affection great, too.
Does it move the plot along? sort of...haven't really thought about that,

Martha Grimes' Richard Jury has all kinds of digressions
so while I do want to know who the killer is, the other stuff
is so great (I want him to fall for his neighbor lady, for instance)
that she can carry a murderer-catching beyond the end of a book
and I don't feel cheated..
but, it takes all kinds...
