Notice on this page that when Doc is realizing - that every one of  
these Boards was a zombie, undead and unclean.-  Denis materializes  
from someplace and answers Doc's thoughts " Dead and clean  is okay?"

extrasensory chops, everyone watching dark shadows, paranoia filling  
the space, from pot ?from real world? from a loss of inner life,loss  
of contact with real people?  Everyone starts to look like zombies  
and then the mind probe from Denis starts a movement toward action,   
bit of light, verbally assessing situation,  the munchies, Jade drops  
in and they all head out.  I wonder if Pynchon is giving us some of  
the reasons he refuses publicity, describing his own sense of what  
publicity  and fame does to those he has seen.

I sense that the dark shadows and parallel worlds are self  
reflective, the writer observing the effect of a fictional device he  
has employed and seeing something a bit more macabre than he intended.
