If this is about more than IV, we've been there re characterization. 
But, just to say, Molly Hite, a good reader of Pynchon I believe you agreed was, did write that she knew a whole cast like The Whole Sick Crew, just for example.... 

I do not think I understand this lyrically sidled at bit...........
