Bird's "Bird of Paradise—his take on "All The Things You Are—is  
developed over three takes in the style of "divisions"; subdivisions  
of the beats.* Same technique found in Beethoven's later variation  
sets, like opus 109 sonata or the op 127 quartet. Goes back to the  
renaissance.

*Sounds like some kind of low-rent exurban enclave.
