Let's remember the close relationship between the CIA and the media -
notably Time magazine but certainly not stopping there.
NY Times doesn't operate in a pure journalistic vacuum
(although admittedly the Pentagon Papers were a pretty cool development)

This is hardly a scoop, but it is a spoonful doled out via an American
establishment media organ,
possibly at the behest of the CIA itself and possibly in order to
exert some kind of pressure on Karzai...
or his brother...or on one faction in the CIA by another faction...
