Forgot to say, I recently read Richard Poirier's essay 'Learning From
The Beatles', in which he focuses on Sgt. Pepper, plus singles such as
All You Need, Penny Lane, etc.
I also re-read his review of GR, confirming my memory that it was one
of the best I've read.
Reading both these essays close together, I was struck by how a lot of
what he has to say about Sg. Pepper etc., could be applied to Pynchon,
and vice versa, particularly his thoughts on pop culture, and Poirier
even uses the term 'historical importance' to describe both GR and
Sgt. Pepper.
The Beatles essay can be found in his book, 'The Performing Self',
which is on Google Books, I think.... hold on...
