line: 'with the collision, legal reflexes reawakened." 

And, paranoid over their obvious munchies' purchases and
a sifter!----they add an extra hundred dollars' worth of 
goods, (with another good P list that includes lightbulbs!
and 'shrink-wrapped japanese pickles'??)

An "extra hundred bucks worth" in some year before 1970
pushes $500 today with inflation. Over the top amount 
for comic effect? or did TRP slip into thinking of $100
today which is still a lot of chips, yogurt, soda and
lightbulbs?
