IVIV and so forth

Reading IV repeatedly, I'm actually pretty shocked at how often that
"and so forth" phrase comes up. Seriously. It's more than just a
verbal tic, surely? Maybe not.

But one pondering which came to mind was this: if you replaced those
elliptical, dismissive "and so forths" with the lists and digressions
and textual detail that they imply, you'd have a nice, long,
Pynchonian novel.
