Tarik Khalil I've been tugging at this name from time to time
since I first heard it.
My first thought was this is a reference to the leftist of Pakistani
origin Tariq Ali, whose thoughtfulness and knowledge about the
global politics of the regions surrounding Iraq Iran I find
informative and intelligent . He came to public attention in the late
60's though televised debate with H Kissinger.
The intellectual connection here in IV seems pretty strong. Tariq Ali
was the intellectual face of combative mistrust and radical defiance
toward the American colonial enterprise. He became famous via Vietnam
war resistance(including the Ali Kissinger fight) and is now a
powerful and knowledgeable critic of policies in Iraq, pakistan
Afghanistan. TK heads Doc to the core event of the murder of Glenn
Carlock and the apparent abduction of Micky Wolfmann.
M. Ali was the champ. He is the famous black Ali
Khalil Gibran was a very popular mystic/artist/poet most famous for a
book called the Prophet. I have a vague memory of a reference to this
in IV but am not sure???
If you say the name aloud the second K disappears and you are left
with Tariq and Alil which sounds like
Allele
Allele in Greek means other and refers in genetics to the 2 pairs of
aternative DNA sequences at the same gene locus. They are related to
the mixing and expression of phenotypic traits in sexual reproduction.
Since V I have noticed TRP using an odd structure of parrallel plot
and character lines which interact , reproduce and combine in
unexpected ways. I suspect Tariq Khalil is meant via the Afro hair
and black white contrast to be one of Doc's others. But he is clearly
paired to Glenn Charlock also and my sense is that this was an
unequal forced pairing. While Ali's name hides reference to
intelligence and victorious combat Charlock's name seems denigrating
not sherlock or shylock but char lock, char equalling servitude or
fuel.one might think of car lock or harlot or a demeaned form of
warlock.
My thoughts on TK's name need further development but I feel the
clues and names that I am mentioning work suggestively well with the
text so am posting for wider consideration.
