Michael Bailey -- heck yes I would love to be reading Inherent Vice
with one or more of my favorite professors from years gone by,
absolutely. One of the teachers who actually helped me learn, not the
jerks who preached their way or the highway. Like Todd G. Willy, then
chairman of the UC Berkeley Rhetoric Dept., I took his Rhetoric of the
Novel course twice, once for credit and once as an auditor, he
introduced me to many fine novelists including one namechecked by
Pynchon: Kawabata Yasunari of Japan. Tzvetan Todorov who as a
visiting professor taught some courses in the French Department where
I took my major, was also very inspiring. Willy had us read a book
often mentioned in this forum by Alice, too -- The Rhetoric of Fiction
by Wayne C. Booth.
