Little tidbit on page 118 with the Nixon Bucks. Doc is pondering if
the Chinese Communists might be behind the funny money, that the
excellent engraving must indicate a "Fiendish Oriental Provenance".
The letters are unnaturally capitalized. So is he just saying Nixon
is a FOP, phony as a 2 dollar bill or is there more? Typed FOP into
Google and the top of the list was Fraternal Order of Police. This is
pretty pointed and followed by Nixon's imaginary "...if it's Fascism
for Freedom, I can dig it. " line.
I think part of the intended role of the fictional Burke Stodger and
the real John Garfield is to direct the curious readers, especially
the young ones to Reagans role in HUAC and the Hollywood blacklist,
and to Nixon's role in supporting Joe McCarthy as he ruined the
lives of hundreds of Americans and turned labor unions and the
Democratic Party of FDR against the American left.
