That's only one of Doc's "chronic" problems  ;o)

Doc seems relatively liberal wrt BB's 100-pound package, in a line  
that sounds funny whether or not BB's still sucking on that big dark  
frozen chocolate banana when Doc says "man's own business what he puts  
in his pickup" (25)

I guess Pynchon's playing off some cop/PI encounter in Chandler  
somewhere? Or some other classic?  I don't remember a banana in The  
Big Sleep and Farewell, My Lovely, which I just raced through, and  
well into The High Window, but I haven't been paying that kind of  
attention, just enjoying Chandler's flow.
