It is an error to name the "New Left" the opposition to a draft that
killed about 60,000 of us and 2.5 to 3 million Southeast Asians, the
mechanized application of chemical warfare materials to peasant lands
and offspring in a war against a peasant army. It is inappropriate
to name the struggles against a completely wrong aggression, the
fulfillment of civil rights struggles and dirty tricks against a new
Cuban government this way. Like Herbert Philbrick's "I Led Three
Lives" depiction of Communist "cells," the actual new left was
organized flat and did not have a hierarchical organization entirely
vulnerable to disruption at the top.
The failure of coalition with Labor was entirely due to organized
labor's short sightedness, racism and ageism. I note the current
state of organized labor.
I doubt that P's views can be characterized in the way noted at the
top. In VL the word "fascist" occurs 11 times not including the
three occurrences of "Fascist Toejam" which certainly tells me the
little rebels in VL were surely off mark in characterizing any
authority as fascist and that is on the mark as a failure.
