Good call!
GR (p. 264, 1995 ed. w/ 760 pages): "But-but bobwire," Slothrop with his mouth full of that fondue, just gobblin' away, "that's progress — you, you can't have open range forever, ...
ATD (p. 65): … making faces, picnickers out at Rocky River, abandoned wheelbarrows, patent bobwire stretchers left to rust under the sky, clocks on wall, stoves in kitchens, streetlamps lit and unlit, policemen running at him waving day-sticks…
ATD (p. 254): … what’d you think you were doing? While creeping into him came the rectal message that somebody might be more than willing to do him up too, along with the quicking hearbeat of hatred, a co-conscious witness of all their past together violated and death’s sovereign bobwire run straight through.
And as long as we're on these midrashic readings, I'll try this only semi-fruitful Google Books search for "wire", which brings to mind wire as in, well a wire ... you know, electricity and cable and the intertubes and all that suggests -- which seems like the opposite of barb wire. You know, barb wire divides off my place from yours and we'll have no contact -- versus electricity and cable and internets that bring us all together (or do they?).
Anyhow, the Google Book search for
wire inauthor:Thomas inauthor:Pynchon
excluding previously mentioned results, shows only really one good addition to this compilation of Pynchon & Wires:
ATD (p 140, 2006, 1085 pages): Among the fantastical glass envelopes and knot- tings of gold wire as unreadable to us as the ebonite control panels scrupulously polished and reflecting ...
But the search also shows:
1984 (p 3, 2003, 339 pages): How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all ...
GR (p 381, 1995, 760 pages): Slothrop has to go in up to his ass a few times to get past that wire, and wait for the sentries to gather around a cigarette at one end of their beat ...
M&D (p 332, 2004, 784 pages): "Bring Capella to the Horizontal Wire," suggests Dixon. "Hey!" Mason in a tone not as vex'd as it might ... "Tha take the Time it crosses the Wire rising, ...
Been down so long it looks like up to me (p 171, 1996, 329 pages, by Richard Fariña): The girl skipped off, ears deaf to her doom, and talked to an old bone of a man in wire glasses at the soda fountain. See her in a year, straddling some ...
V (p 300, 1999, 533 pages): "It could as well have been a low-flying airplane or high-tension wire," Slab said. "But someday that bird will be impaled on the gargoyle's teeth, ...
