which have seen too much, to avoid hurting them by accident with
reflexes geared and honed to self-protection
(and falling asleep on rooftops...)

but not just that, also this:
a big problem of somebody who gets to be 30, unmarried and
carrying a torch for somebody purt' near impossible,
is perhaps a feeling like one  will never settle down, that life really
does have other pleasures...
...one is just unfit for little happy vignettes, one will
just spoil them, so best to enjoy them from afar and not even try.
