We can—and must—read Shasta as a subtext. The realm of the Hippie  
Mythos, Valhalla for the Californian Mystical Lysergic type. Shasta is  
that place up north where it just has to be groovier.

Note that most folks reading this scene [where Amethyst does what most  
little kids are gonna do in the presence of Mighty Mouse] are going to  
think about Andy Kaufman.  Dontcha think that TRP just maybe knows the  
about Andy Kaufman routine, like that might be a part of the mix here?  
Of course, when you think about it, there's hardly anything more pop- 
pomo than Andy Kaufman's "Mighty Mouse" routine.
