Belonging to a certain literary area or trend is one thing, having the 
same character (be it real or fictional) of another writer is another 
thing. Pynchon took a lot from Hawkes; can't say about Gaddis 
because I haven't read him. However, to me postmodernist doesn't 
mean shallow, nihilist or lacking feelings. Whatever the zealots of po-
mo keep mindlessly repeating.
