I mostly agree, but there are fortunately a couple of notable
exceptions, first and foremost Richard Poirier, who recently
passed away. His reviews of Lot 49 and GR read like fully fledged
critical essays - a pretty astounding feat.
Also, Louis Menand's review of M&D come to mind as particularly
worth reading.
The reviews of AtD, on the other hand, were mostly depressing. But
then again, reviewers were only given a month or so for the job,
so Penguin Press is partly to blame for the poor quality of most
AtD reviews.
