Actually, the use of fingers as measure where objects are positioned
in the sky far predates stoners. Seamen have used that method for
aeons. Of course, there have no doubt been stoners around as long as
humans have known how to get a buzz, too. but the mercantile aspect
to which you are referring here is relatively recent. I do not mean
to imply that you are mistaken in interpreting it the way you have
here, but, when reading Pynchon, it is helpful, in my experience, to
keep the mind at full sail. Hate to miss a knot of the breeze.
