What do you think of Shadrack in Sula looking into the prison toilet
bowl and realizing that he's not an Invisible Man? It's no LSD trip;
that Black Johnny Got His Gun still has limbs, but that PTSD, like
some bad LSD Trip strips him of his reflection(s) and his Art. He
can't think about Being. Knowing and Meaning are kinda impossible w/o
Being. Being an Invisible Man, his reflection, what is cast back to
him from the mirror of malicious eyes is all he knows, and so he makes
art. National Suicide Day. But this is no SOS, no sold on suicide
sickness, but the cure. This is big difference between those poor
rocket cabalists and Shadrack. Big difference between Morrison and
Pynchon. Shadrack's celebration is now a celebration that is woven
into the community. Like a quilt. Now, those other artists, like
Sheeler, they too are confronted with the erasure of reflection and
art, of Being, Knowing, and Meaning.   Pynchon too.
