This reminds me of the scene with Hope (sorry to keep dwelling on this scene -- I'll get over it, eventually).  Hope, the cleaned-up junkie now has "new choppers."  So Hope, free from drugs is now also free from dentists.  

In Pynchon, dentists = drug-pushers.  Shrinks (well, Dr. Hilarious, anyway) are also drug pushers.  Pynchon's had his share of bad dental experiences, and dentists are never the good guys, particularly in IV.  Doesn't seem to like shrinks much either.
