There's a lot more going on in the original book, too, which is
fascinated by clocks and time (as was the writer). A final chapter
which "solves" the mystery was removed and not made available until
after her death. It hints at a hole in space or time and sees several
main characters transforming into crab- and lizard-like creatures.
