Again, Pynchon does not use the word Preterite in only one sense, in
only the Calvinist sense. Pynchon constantly uses words and phrases
with potential multiple meanings. Preterite is one of those words,
just as the Phrase "Inherent Vice" goes off in multiple directions.
It's the man's working method.
