These rumors were most prevalent before the release of M&D. Apparently
the title surfaced and an assumption was made that the novel was about
the civil war. I.e., M&D was the so-called civil war novel.

Subject: Forthcoming Civil War Novel? ("Mason-Dixon Line")
So I have heard from time to time whispers of a forthcoming Civil War
novel by Mr. Pynchon, and at one point concluded it was an April Fools
joke just before the release of Against the Day.
However, I was recently reading the chapter on Pynchon in Professor
Bloom's collection on 'Novels and Novelists', where, after dissecting
The Story of Byron the Bulb, he briefly mentions a forthcoming novel
entitl'd "Mason-Dixon Line".
Anyone know anything else about this?
Given the current situation in America, I feel there could not be a
more appropriate time...?
