Academia.edu (in the age of More/No more/ Free Networks) /Ning closing

Just as a side note, whereas more networking probably a good thing, I can't
shake this sinking feeling that we may one day, get diminishing returns.
How can we keep them strong?

No More Free Networks http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Net-Gold/message/32494

While I hope academia.edu has a longevity plan I have mixed feelings about
one more place to post. What if the Pynchon-l listserv was on Ning and then
poof! gone! Loads of research potentially gone.

Maybe some of the best gold from the pynchon listserv should be sent to the
academia.edu site.

I know ..if I don't want to participate on the Academia site, then, I don't
have to and probably no one will miss it.

But it still freaks me out if everyone does jump off the listserv, then
there's reams of research there, and poof, gone. Usenet, Usergroups, yahoo
groups come and go. The Pynchon-l stays there, hanging tough for me, for
more than a decade. Let's hope it continues to be the secure storage, with
improved searching, that we've relied on for sooo loonnnggg.
