I take a step back to p.364 (hc) where Benny says "I did it" to Fina.
Then there is a presentation of all his 'woman problems'...his concerns.

1) Isn't "I did it" curious to say in at least this way: Benny DID NOTHING
when Fina was in the bathroom getting hit...................????
So, he is taking responsibility for inaction by saying I did IT [Allowed it to
happen/] ? for a sin of omission as some call it?

2) Lotsa 'caring' for lotsa people, women, from that schlemiel Benny, eh?

I'd say SHROUD's words don't really (is there such a "really" in V?)
come from SHROUD. More like from within Benny.
