There is the phrase "His glassy essence' in Measure for Measure.

The gloss alludes to Montaigne, whom Shakespeare is known to have
read hard, who articulated the notion (of the time) that one's essence
is "of God' which essence was supposedly mirrored inside, in one's soul
---which could be seen, mayhaps, when one looked into oneself in a
real-world mirror...

The method of making mirrors out of plate glass was invented by 16th-century
Venetian glassmakers on the island of Murano, who covered the back of the glass
with mercury, obtaining near-perfect and undistorted reflection.

We remember the mercury-backed mirror in GR....
