and after that sadly hilarious back-and-forth with Benny, who has
to proclaim he is nothing if not selfish even hollow inside where feelings
should be and in which Rachel's simple act of refuting Benny for his
naive immaturity---"You have to grow up...my own unlucky boy......
maybe ours is an act too?"........[Is his self-condemnation here a variety
of narcissism, i.e. he cannot not even IMAGINE how she--any women?--act?]
Then "she fell asleep to have cheerful, brightly colored explicit dreams
about sexual intercourse.".....
Dreams are such good things in Pynchon, our unconscious bringing us what
we really want or need and I remember from some remarks on Freud (and
other psychologists) Wittgenstein asking why Freud had no examples of
overt sex dreams---all were the hidden symbols kind (I believe he noticed)
Rachel's mind is one with itself even when sleeping?
