Perhaps I confused with the terms again. I don't read you, Mark, as
New Critical or as practicing "close reading" as the phrase is used in
critical circles. Your reading are new historical at times, the "ice
box" thread is a good example. Your readings are often inter-textual,
the Shakespeare intertextuals post of late. You can dance with almost
any partner, swing with the formalists and new critics and so on. You
do stick to the text and I like that because I like opening the books
and finding the passages you reference and raise questions about. I am
a pragmatist and a pluralist. I favor Chicago School, but I like to
dance the Kenosha Kid too.
