Could the the V in this allusion to Eliot's poem be Vivienne, and then
to Women Beware Women, a Jacobean tragedy written by Thomas Middleton,
and first published in 1657? How are Benny's exploits here a game of
chess? The Eliot allusion to Hamlet, to abortion, to war and the
Vulnerability of the Fecund, green child (Ophelia) is here as well. At
least for those who have ears to sea with.
