It may be that old Rosencrantz & Guildenstern, that Guildenstern &
Rosencrantz, that Tweedledum & Tweedledee, that Tweedledee &
Tweedledum double stuff of difference and sameness again. Here, it may
be that Profane, who, despite all his self-deprecating ethos, his
schlemiel's stance, is quite assertive in this, though unlucky
numbered chapter, where Fortune's yarn is woven into the cable/cabal
of history when Profane is given work, not by Rachel, but by
jurisdictional dispute (conflicting claims made by two different labor
unions to an employer regarding assignment of the work or union
representation), and by fortuitous folly Profane saves Pig, member of
the Scaffold's Sick Crew, and member of the Spoon's Sick Crew, and his
condemnless member, which Pig then forces on Paola, whom Profane also
saves with a turn, if not of Fortune's Wheel, of a code that even Pig
must honor. Paola, Stencil tells us, is in love with Profane, his
chivalry, his aloofness, dis-membership from the Crew. Stencil seems
to confirm this, though Profane has, if only to keep Rachel off his
back, as he fears Fina-dependence and dependents, beem smoking dope
with the boyz and talking Spoon cant to convince her that he is Sick,
but she consults with Paola and there is no fooling Paola who knows
Sick from Love in the Western World. What does it mean that Benny
claims that his affair with Rachel was no different from his affair
with Paola? As Dylan sez, you gonna make me a Virgin if you go.
