some kind of an accent on the name of Office Jones (p404) - so it
would be, Officer Ho-ness?
so apparently (and apologies Alice for bringing up more chapter 12
stuff, but I never noticed this before) Roony Winsome has in some
unspecified way ratted out his fellow Crew members when he got to
Bellevue?
Just different times, I'm thinkn' - nowadays there'd be paramedics or
something, and the police kind of back off once somebody goes into the
mental health system? Or maybe not, I guess with a suicide attempt,
that's technically a crime, right? Anyway, they talked to his doctor
- and go back to raid RS&M's pad.
But, y'know, regardless of the song about cops in Vineland, police and
shore patrols generally have kind of a salvific role in Pynchon - like
how the SP prevents Benny from doing something he will regret with
that teenager on the pool table, or how Hector provides one of the few
opportunities for Zoyd to think and justify his existence...
anyway, like the last episode of Seinfeld where they all go to jail --
Ten Eyck and Ho-ness arrest them all!
