Alligators in the Sewer Day

As New Yorkers deal with the relentless, pounding winter storm
blanketing their city with frigid, evil white, we can take some small
comfort in knowing that at least the city’s streets are not prowled by
vicious, prehistoric monsters. That’s right, today marks the 75th
anniversary of the alligators-in-the-sewer scare. The notorious urban
legend dates back at least as far as 1935 when a New York Times
reporter announced that an 8 foot gator was dicking around in East
Harlem. How does a great city honor an old, scary rumor of highly
questionable validity? With a press conference on the steps of City
Hall, of course.
So as you sit inside watching TV and turning inward to avoid the
threat of the storm a’spewin’, take solace knowing that your city may
not be safe from snow, but it’s fortified against crocs.
