In a fine reveiw of what sounds like an incredibly fascinating new biography of Emily Dickinson---the sex going on around her in Puritanically-silent New England and the fight over her work, the author of the bio sez this about Dickinson's poems:

“these [poetic details] are not biographic facts, they are states of being consequent upon events closed to us”.
