this is rich coming from Vollmann:

As is usually the case with such assemblages, “The Routes of Man” is uneven
in the quality of its parts, its overall coherence incomplete. The weakest
chapter, which retails Conover’s longish drive with the Beijing Target Auto
Club, is nearly as tedious to read as it must have been for him to
experience
