Lew got into detective work not by his political beliefs but by a sin he was supposed to have committed. 

Has no idea of it. P representing something like 'original sin' here? Karmic destiny?--his 'karmic adjustment'-[VL] in this existence?

"Those who didn't know [how he had sinned] still acted puzzled, as if he were sending out rays of iniquity."...So, like Cain he is marked/seen as a sinner in society even if his sin is unknown. Like many were judged in Calvinism, he is seen with sad looks [predestined to hell?] that turned into moral horror.    Like a witch in historic terms....
