He leaves a note at work suggesting he'd be back shortly. ..."You have destroyed your name"...his reputation, obviously...his identity, it seems? 
"What was the name you had before you were born?" --Zen line.  Relevant here?  

The the wife he adored, when she found his breezy note.....assume she found the one he left at work?.....we learn of no other....

She hops on the crypto-Ell to "plead with him to come back'....She assumes
his breezy note about being back shortly, left at work, implies he was out
of the office for some afternoon delight? ...and she wants, at first, to get him back.............THEN, however

'reflection to the pulse of the rails"....rubbing with bad vibes in P's world...'had done its work' and she is now finished with him. Totally. To tease him and us, she won't even repeat his sin. [i hear echoes of The Trial here]
