Merle, itinerant American salesman type....even tries to 'sell' his daughter when she comes of age....[Cf. newly elected Mass Senator who spoke of his 'available' daughters on election night]....notice page 56,
his dream is of his wallet! containing, like ours might, like a Cornell box, the bits of his life, ticket stubs, receipts and a pic of Erlys Mills, his wife, who left him for a more interesting man, Zombini the Mysterious.

Merle, A Yankee, from 'soft' New England let's call it, Connecticut
'a region of clockmakers, gunsmiths and inspired tinkers.'....which the original land grant extended all the way to Ohio......which still seemed like Connecticut, "just shifted west", was all.

But he's a "salesman", a man on the 'practical side of things'--p.58 who wondered what major questions of the universe, "Exists, doesn't exist, what's that got to do with the price of turnips?"....who yet does get
interested in bigger things (learned in the newspapers) and makes connections through people, not abstraction......desperado Blinky Morgan
as an embodiment of the Michelson--Morley experiments......
