The "brute" reference here, from Conrad to Melville, and from these to
Pynchon's V., with a little help from Poe, is the whiteness of the
whale and the horror of the light bereft of the rainbow cosmetics that
paint the face of whore master man's evasions is at the very heart of
Pynchon's dark romantics, but to reduce this theme-existential
annihilation--to a political snub of a dead president is the work of
street corner journalists.
