In The Gutenberg Galaxy, McLuhan shows - or sets out to show - 
nothing less than the way the move from oral and manuscript culture 
to print and typographic literary leads to the Cartesian world view, 
where we slice and dice until we've killed the damn thing in our efforts at Control and Analysis. 

If I remember correctly, in at least one of his letters - in the 60s?--
 Pynchon talks specifically about McLuhan. I suspect that a close reading
 of P's work in light of McLuhan's would be fruitful.
