As with many things, it's not an either-or situation. My kids are all
21 or less, raised in the mp3 headphone age, and they do a lot of
both. They play live music with their friends, and they listen to
their headphones. The live music would has the edge over the
headphone experience for them, but the listening feeds the intimate
music making experience. In any field of endeavor in art or science
you're going to have those who take the discipline to the level of
mastery and those who do it on more of a 'folk' level. But, I don't
consider the Einsteins and Anthony Braxtons elitist. While I enjoy
listening to the Beatles occasionally, and I enjoy jamming with my
kids, I find a necessary (for me) satisfaction listening to http://
tinyurl.com/5kanxs And call it elitism if you will, but I prefer a
world with Gravity's Rainbow in it preferable to a world that had
only campfire chats and Owen Meany.
