deploring and depicting top-down byword-generation process where the
ovine populace
marks events by media.

The media-generated time-landmarks that Doc seems to navigate by include
the NBA playoffs, and the starting time of Hawaii 5-0.

But as to non-mediated experiences, don't his acid trips serve as
time-binders for him?  memorable events
that he can place things before or after;
and you could make a case for how the smoking of a joint, especially
with one or more others, is a chance to
plant a memory marker that, later on, may loom up out of the fog....
