Now, with Joseph's response, I think I see what Paul N. meant by
"what is underneath the beach".......
Life lived, happiness, Shambala,?....all of the unspecified truths of
the 'meaning of life', the good life? the non-transcendant 'religious' meaning of life?.....that are caught in the symbol of
that wave....riding that wave aka Death's Doorsill:
doorsill, doorstep, threshold - the sill of a door; a horizontal piece of wood or .... to be at death's door → an der Schwelle des Todes stehen (geh); ...
Living in the moment, all of one's self in the act, in every second, with the possibility---reality---of death always....Who needs Heidegger with Pynchon finding these packed-full symbols?
"For the last few weeks now, St. Flip of Lawndale, for whom Jesus Christ was not only personal savior but surfing consultant as well, who rode an old-school redwood plank" ...
