It's a RAND/MIT/Naval Research Laboratory thing. Maxwell's Demon
plays a very large role and continues to do so. After WWII, the
military had a number of scientists left over who could be employed
in C3I Systems Analysis (Operations Research in Britain). They
happily applied the laws of thermodynamics to social science and
economics (neoclassical economics, the Chicago School). It's quite
pervasive and not just in the gizmos but in much that has shaped our
world. Robert McNamara is/was a leading example. It's a very large
list: Norbert Wiener, John von Neumann, Claude Shannon (entropy),
Herbert Simon (in a number of fields) . . . Privacy concerns, well
there is no privacy. Does P know this stuff? Don't we all, somehow?
