Yes, he did revitalize the genre. Those first 8-10 Spenser novels are
classics -- later, they were still fun, but they began to feel more like
episodes of a TV show than novels with deep issues at stake. As a stylist,
he could say so much so quickly. A friend remarked that Parker wrote as if
he were being charged by the word.
