My take on a "collective unconscious" is essentially what I would
label "human instinct," a consciousness that existed prior to "the
fall," meaning prior to the development of a capacity for reasoning
re. "good and evil."  If animals have something called instinct, it
stands to reason that humans do also.  I'm sure the development of
language is a large part of what divides humanity from a reliance on
instinct.  But I don't think the divide is a sharp one, knowing that
animals have a great capacity for reasoning, even without language as
we know it.
