on the Virgin, Venus & the Dynamo per Adams

To oversimplify until you read the relevant pages or I get a scanner:

Unlike all the lame ways we Americans see The Virgin, Venus.......

Adams sees it/her as a force......like the dynamo.................

A force, not just an inspiration, a muse, a personification............

And this force drove the creation of all of the 'superstitious buildings' --read 
cathedrals, churches
that are now , at 1900,  being built by dynamo forces....

lines of force....a phrase from V. Chap 1 and more.....is an oft-used phrase in 
Adams, esp from later chapters---after 1890.
