Ever watch Family Guy? Is Brian funny? Is Stewie funny? Read Hamlet
and study it. Watch a couple-three films of the play. Read and watch
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. Funny? Black & Blue humor,
both, I think, are here in Part 3 of Chapter III of V..The more we get
the dark comic elements, like the famous grave and comic scene in
Hamlet, the more we appreciate how funny they are. Now, it's not fall
on the floor comedy when we get P's punch at literature's most famous
pedaphile, carol Alice, and it's not roll in the aisle comedy when
Hamlet amuses those in the know with his critique of the
children-actors theater and the playwrites who write plays for these
rival theaters of Shakespeare's Globe, but it is humorus none and
never the more or less.
no?
That's one difference, and there are many others, in the use of Adams
and the use of other texts here. Sure, Maltese Falcon, Condad's Secret
Agent...but it is Adams who, as one critic put it, rapes young
Pynchon.
